Emily’s Elixir of Life

Do yourself a favor and, pick up an armful of lemons, turmeric, horseradish, ginger, apple cider, honey, and apple cider vinegar, then go home and click through to this blog so you can make a pitcher of this liquid sunshine in the comfort of your own home.

Ingredients:

¼ cup fresh turmeric root
½ cup fresh ginger root
2 oz fresh horseradish
8-10 lemons
¼ to ½ cup apple cider vinegar (depends on how strong you want it)
½ cup local honey
4 cups apple cider

Instructions:

Juice the turmeric, ginger, and horseradish into a cup. If you don’t have a juicer, you can finely grate them with a grater or micro plane.

Squeeze all the juice from the fresh lemons into a bowl or pitcher.

Add fresh juice to a pitcher, and stir in the rest of the ingredients (you may need to use a whisk to incorporate the honey). If you want the flavor to be stronger, add more cider vinegar. If you’d prefer it sweeter, add more honey or apple cider.

*If you have grated the first three ingredients instead of using a juicer, put the grated “pulp” into a blender with the rest of the ingredients, blend on high for 2 minutes, then pass through a strainer or cheese cloth to remove the pulp.

Flavor variations/additions:

Orange juice, Thai ginger, spicy peppers, carrot juice, pineapple juice, cayenne, cinnamon, black tea.
