African Market Baskets
These baskets are beautiful and smart! From holding your groceries or taking supplies to the beach to organizing your kid’s toys or using purely as décor, these make a gift anyone can use. And each purchase of a fair trade basket makes a huge impact on the lives of the weavers and their families.
The baskets are made in Bolgatanga—the largest town in the Upper East region of Ghana and very close to the edge of the Sahara Desert. Basket weaving has helped bring much-needed income to the villages surrounding Bolgatanga. The traditional skill which has been handed down from generation to generation provides employment to mostly women. An average of two baskets a week can be woven by a woman who also has household chores, firewood collection, water collection, washing, and the care of her children to tend to each day.
African Market Baskets founder and CEO, Steve Karowe works directly with the artisans and visits Africa regularly to meet with the weavers and hold town hall meetings where he solicits feedback and listens to concerns and needs. He works with each weaver’s group to ensure that products are being made to the highest quality and design standards. And, he oversees Every Basket Helps™ goodwill projects with the goal of reducing poverty in the region.

And while you can sip your drink straight from the hole in the lid, the coolest part of the silicone plug is the little space on the side to hold your reusable straw! It’s never been easier to reduce, reuse, and have a merry green holiday!
