Celebrate Independents Month: Choose Indie, Strengthen Community

This July, we invite you to celebrate Independents Month—a time dedicated to recognizing the incredible impact of locally owned and independent businesses and the values they bring to our communities.

It’s about more than just shopping local. It’s about celebrating:

The spirit of entrepreneurship, individuality, and character that sets our independents apart.
The way these businesses give back—sharing their time, talents, goods, and services with the community.
The vital role they play in meeting local needs and making our towns healthier, wealthier, and more vibrant.

Take the Indie Challenge
Looking for a simple way to get involved? Take the Indie Challenge—pledge to make all of your purchases from locally owned businesses for one day, one week, or even the entire month. Whether you’re shopping for groceries, grabbing a coffee, or picking out a gift, choose indie and make a big impact.

Traveling in July? You can still take the Indie Challenge on the road. Ask locals for recommendations, and seek out independent business alliances wherever you go to support the unique shops, restaurants, and services that make every place special.

What’s the Local Multiplier Effect?
Independents Month is part of AMIBA’s national Choose Indie Local campaign, and it’s the perfect time to highlight the Local Multiplier Effect. When you spend your dollars at locally owned businesses, more of that money stays in the community—supporting jobs, local services, and further investment in your neighborhood.

It Starts With You
This month is also about recognizing your own power—as a consumer, a neighbor, and a community member. Independents Month is a chance to reflect on your ability to act independently, make thoughtful choices, and help shape a resilient local economy. Take a moment to thank the small business owners in your life and show them some love.

A Brief History of Independents Month
Independents Month began as Independents Week back in 2001, when a group of businesses in Tampa, Florida, came together to celebrate the power of local. Co-created by Carla Jimenez, co-owner of Inkwood Books, and the Tampa Independent Business Alliance, the idea soon grew. By 2005, the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA) helped spread the movement across the country—and today, communities nationwide celebrate Independents Month every July.

So join us—shop local, celebrate local, and choose indie this July. Because when we support independent businesses, we all thrive.
