2024 Fall Field Day

The 2024 Fall Field Day is an event not to miss!  This year’s field day will feature even more vendors, speakers, and demonstrations than last year.  This is a great opportunity to send your staff to learn about emerging issues, experience hands-on skill building, network with industry peers, and earn professional credits. At only $25 per person with lunch included, this is a great value!

Come experience hands-on interactive demonstrations including setting a bluestone patio, calibrating a backpack sprayer, using excavator-mounted lasers, and much more.

Learn about tree diseases, management of invasive jumping worms, the art of Japanese pruning, and more in classes presented by specialists from UNH Extension and industry partners.

Cost: $25 per person – lunch included! So we can plan for food and supplies, preregistration is required.

SESSION DESCRIPTIONS 

Matrix Planting: A Guide to Mimicking Natural Plant Communities in the Built Environment

9am – 10am, Big Barn, Meg Herndon, M Herndon Landscape Architecture, LLC

Matrix planting is a low-maintenance, layered technique that emphasizes creating plant communities rather than collections of individual species. In this session, landscape architect, Meg Herdon, will cover the benefits of working with landscape plugs, the concept of plant sociability, and techniques for ensuring staggered bloom sequences throughout the growing season.

NH Pesticide Regulatory Review and Update

9am – 10am, Amphitheater, David Rousseau, NHDAMF, Division of Pesticide Control

As pesticide regulations change, it’s your responsibility to stay up to date and comply with new rules. David Rousseau, director of NH Division of Pesticide Control will provide a pesticide regulation review and will discuss recent and anticipated regulatory changes that applicators need to be aware of. (* 1 pest credit)

Understanding Construction Lasers

9am – 11am, Front Field, Alan LaRose, Jon LaRose, Gus LaRose, New England Laser

A good construction laser is an investment. In this session, New England Laser will discuss what to look for when investing in a rotating laser, what to avoid, features to consider, and how to care for your laser. After the discussion, lasers will be available for instruction, hands on, and questions.

Setting a Natural Stone Patio

9am – 11am, Stone Wall, Peter Ryder, The Stone Trust

Last year, Pete Ryder and other members of the Stone Trust led a hands-on demonstration of proper stone wall building practices. This year’s demonstration will expand on that with the construction of a natural stone patio behind the wall. Learn how to construct the base, proper techniques for strapping and setting of large slabs, and the use of hand tools to cut and shape the flagging.

Treat Your Clothes for Tick & Mosquito Protection

10:30am – 11:30am, Big Barn, Matt Cahillane, Ecological Solutions

A hands-on workshop to learn about the only three EPA-approved short-term repellents that are known to be highly safe and effective on both ticks and mosquitos as well as how to treat clothing with long-term permethrin spray for six weeks of bug protection. Attendees: please bring a set of your own clothing (i.e. light-colored pants, shirt, socks, shoes) to be treated on-site. You will receive a free bottle of Permethrin for you to take home for the next treatment.

Japanese Gardens in America

10:30am – 11:30am, Amphitheater, Palmer Koelb, Shin-Boku Nursery

Shin-Boku Nursery follows a 1500+ year tradition of Japanese garden tree trimming in the production of truly unique stock and garden design. Owner, Palmer Koelb, will share his thoughts and insights on the evolution and future of Japanese gardens in America and will talk about the species selection and pruning that goes into developing the unique nursery stock at Shin-Boku.

IPM for Tree Fruit and Berry Crops in New England Landscapes

Fruit trees and berries in the landscape require special care in order toproduce the quality fruits and berries clients hope to get from their landscapes. This session will address the most common insect pests and diseases of tree fruit and berry crops in New England and will outline management strategies that landscape professionals could consider as components of their suite of services. (* 1 pest credit)

Preparing Your Backpack or Handheld Sprayer for Consistent Coverage

In this hands-on session, we’ll look at how factors such as walking speed, nozzle height, and tank pressure affect the amount of product being applied through a backpack or handheld sprayer. Learn how to get consistent application rates and uniform coverage to amplify your pest control results. (* 1 pest credit)

The Need for Grade Control in Today’s Market

Having grade control on your excavator is a game changer. If you pay someone to hold a grade rod or spend hours each day climbing in and out of your machine to check grade, you’re throwing money into the hole that you’re digging. Jump into an excavator during this session to see for yourself how having a 2D or 3D system installed on your machine can make you more profitable.

Large Perennial Planter Demo

12:30pm – 2:30pm, Stone Wall, Ben Huntington, Pleasant View Gardens

With the stone retaining wall and flag stone patio complete, it’s time to fill the granite planters with a mix of easy-care perennials!  Ben Huntington will demonstrate container design and installation along the new patio wall.

Cultivating Resiliency in Landscape Trees

Extreme weather, new pests and diseases, and a myriad of other stresses are causing noticeable damage to landscape trees. Learn about the causes of current tree decline and “best guess” speculations on what to expect going forward. (* 1 pest credit)

What Can we do About Jumping Worms?

Jumping worms are a new pest that’s taking a heavy toll on landscapes and psyches of landowners and gardeners across the US, including all over NH. Learn what we know about these destructive worms and what options we have for management. (* 1 pest credit)
