Flavorful Fact: California produces 83% of the country’s strawberries, which means that shipping 1 pound of strawberries to NH uses over 1.5 pounds of fossil fuel.  Instead of purchasing strawberries from afar, stock up on local strawberries when they’re in season and freeze them or make them into jam to use throughout the year.

The taste of a freshly picked strawberry is one of life’s sweetest treats. Not only are they juicy and delicious, but they also mean that summer is right around the corner. Picking strawberries requires a delicate touch, and is best done on a sunny day when the berries are dry. Sun-warmed berries taste extra sweet and need nothing to enhance their natural perfection. However, if you feel inclined to save some for dessert, this strawberry shortcake is a luscious way to go.
