SUMMARY:2024 Holocaust Memorial Lecture - "From Treblinka and Trawniki: Forensic Archaeological Investigations at Sites of Nazi Persecution"
DESCRIPTION:The Monadnock Food Co-op (MFC) Community Book Club aims to create a space for community engagement amongst Co-op Member-Owners and the larger community through thoughtful connections. We strive to be a space that will engage and foster civil dialogue through reading and discussion. \nTo learn what the group has been reading since early 2022 visit\, monadnockfood.coop/co-op-updates/bookclub/ \nThis month the group will attend a free and open to the public event being offered by the Cohen Center. This 2024 Holocaust Memorial Lecture – “From Treblinka and Trawnkiki: Forensic Archaeological Investigations at Sites of Nazi Persecution” will be held at the Mabel Brown Room at Keene State College or via Livestream on Tuesday\, September 24 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. it will feature Professor Caroline Sturdy Colls \nLecture Description : The crimes perpetrated at Treblinka death camp are well documented by historians. However\, despite its notoriety\, investigations of the physical evidence connected to the camp and those who encountered it have historically been limited. Similarly\, its wider landscape\, comprising a labor camp\, execution and work sites\, has been poorly understood. In this lecture\, Professor Caroline Sturdy Colls will demonstrate how forensic archaeological approaches have revealed new information about the mechanisms of mass murder at Treblinka and\, in particular\, how new understandings of the fates and experiences of the victims have emerged from the analysis of the material traces that they left behind. Professor Sturdy Colls will also discuss how her work at Treblinka led her to investigate the camp at Trawniki\, where the “foot soldiers” who assisted the SS were trained. \n\nSpeaker Bio : Professor Caroline Sturdy Colls’s pioneering research focuses on the application of interdisciplinary approaches to the investigation of Holocaust landscapes. She conducted the first forensic archaeological investigations at Treblinka Extermination and Labour Camps\, the results of which will be presented in her forthcoming book\, Finding Treblinka. She is also the author of several other books including Holocaust Archaeologies: Approaches and Future Directions (2015)\, the Handbook on Missing Persons (2016) and Adolf Island: The Nazi Occupation of Alderney (2022). \nIf you have any questions\, please contact cohencenter@keene.edu. We look forward to seeing you in person or online for this fascinating lecture! \nThis event is part of the Cohen Center calendar.

SUMMARY:Crys Matthews in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Peterborough Folk Music presents Crys Matthews in concert.\n“A passionate and powerful blend of infectious Americana melodies and folky instrumentation\, Matthews delivers her honest songwriting through a beautifully raw and unfiltered lens. Oozing soul\, her voice bleeds with emotion and gratitude\, while simple piano melodies and upbeat percussion fill you with appreciation and love for the people around us who fight for change.” — Ear Milk \nAlready being hailed as “the next Woody Guthrie\,” Nashville resident Crys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster child for intersectionality\,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” She is made for these times and\, with the release of her new\, hope-fueled\, love-filled social justice album Changemakers\, MaNhews hopes to take her place alongside some of her heroes in the world of social-justice music like Sweet Honey in the Rock and Holly Near. Of MaNhews\, ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says\, “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice\, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times.” \nMatthews began performing in 2010 but cemented her acclaim at Lincoln Center as the 2017 NewSong Music and Performance Competition grand prize winner. That year she also released two new projects\n— her album of thoughtful songs on love and life called The lmagineers\, and her EP called Battle Hymn for an Army of Lovers\, which tackles social justice themes. MaNhews also won the People‘s Music Network’s Social Justice Songs contest at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance. Loyal fans quickly followed as Matthews racked up performances at large music festivals and prestigious venues across the country including the Sundance Film Festival\, Eerrville Folk Festival\, and locally at venues like The Birchmere\, The Hamilton\, Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center\, and Jammin’ Java. In her TedTalk about difficult conversations called “Sing\, Don’t Shout — An Alternative Approach” Matthews spoke about being born and raised in a small town in southeastern North Carolina by an A.M.E. preacher\, and how she witnessed the power of music from an early age. A former drum major and classically trained clarinetist turned folk singer\, Matthews is using her voice to answer Dr. Martin Luther King’s call to be “a drum major for justice.” \n“I believe in hope\,” Matthews said. “As a social-justice songwriter\, it is my duty to keep breathing that hope and encouragement into the people who listen to my music.” And\, from the title track to the last track\, Changemakers does just that all while tackling some heavy topics like immigration\, the opioid crisis\, Black Lives Matter\, and gun safety to name a few. “Ani DiFranco said\, “People used to make records as in a record of an event\,”” said Matthews\, “so I hope that these songs will serve as a time capsule\, a record of the events of the last four years and what it was like to live through them.” Crys Matthews’s thoughtful\, realistic\, and emotional songs speak to the voice of our generation and remind us why music indeed soothes the soul. \nhttns://www.crvsmatthews.com/
