SUMMARY:Youth Mental Health First Aid Training Course
DESCRIPTION:Identify. Understand. Respond. \n  \nYouth Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based training that teaches you how to identify\, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders in youth. This training gives adults who work with youth the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to children and adolescents who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care. \n  \nFirst Aiders will complete a 2-hour\, self-paced online course\, and then participate in a 6-hour\, instructor-led video conference. \n  \nThe Youth Mental Health First Aid course focuses on recognizing the patterns of thoughts\, feelings\, behaviors\, and appearance that show there might be a challenge rather than on a specific disorder. You will learn an action plan for non-crisis and crisis scenarios. By the end of the course\, you will be able to: \n• Describe the purpose of Youth Mental Health First Aid and the role of the First Aider \n• Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact youth \n• Explain the impact of traumatic experiences and the role of resilience on adolescent development \n• Apply the appropriate steps of the YMHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to non-crisis situations \n• Apply the appropriate steps of the YMHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to crisis situations \n• Choose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of Youth Mental Health First Aid in a crisis or non-crisis situation \nNo Cost \n  \n#BeTheDifference

SUMMARY:When Disasters Hit Home: How Local Journalism Can Build Resilient Communities During Emergencies
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 14 | 2:00-3:00 PM EST \nHave you experienced a disaster in your community? If you haven’t yet\, you will — and local journalism can play a crucial role in helping communities prepare\, respond\, and recover during emergencies. In rural areas\, it is local media who are the first responders of information and are best positioned to get accurate information to those who need it most. Local media is in a unique position to reach underserved residents\, verify quickly changing conditions\, and provide accountability through disaster recovery. Like many other response organizations\, local and rural newsrooms can be strained by few resources\, and rely on collaboration to be most effective. \nThis session will be led by Kate B. Maxwell and Maria Arce\, two Reynold’s Journalism Institute Innovation Fellows and community news leaders experienced with covering emergencies and centering community information needs before\, during\, and after disasters. They will share cost-effective strategies\, including emergency tools for newsrooms\, how to take advantage of ham radio communications when all other means fail\, and means of collaboration between media and community groups. Resources will be available in both English and Spanish.

SUMMARY:Restoring the Fish Habitat of Great Brook in Walpole\, NH
DESCRIPTION:Time & Location\n\n\nAug 14\, 2024\, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM \nDistant Hill Gardens\, 507 March Hill Rd\, Walpole\, NH 03608\, USA \n\n\n\n\nAbout the event\n\n\nJoin us for the Forest Stewardship Summer Series! This series of educational events will focus on private forest stewardship and conservation. We aim to facilitate communication among forest owners\, practitioners\, and educators\, to  strengthen an ethic of forest stewardship in the region. Registration is free\, but slots are limited. Donations to the sponsoring organizations are welcomed and encouraged. \n  \nSee a stream restoration project in progress! \n  \nThe addition of instream wood is a centerpiece of wild brook trout restoration because it restores natural stream dynamics and habitat. Large wood creates diverse flow patterns\, helps retain sediment\, creates pools\, and provides habitat for steam insects and cover for fish. Properly anchored in place\, large woody material provides habitat for fish\, insects\, amphibians and small mammals. \n  \nJoin John Magee and Jared Lamy\, Fish Habitat Biologists with N.H. Fish and Game\, to learn about the benefits and the process of strategically adding wood to streams. \n  \nWe will meet at Distant Hill Gardens at 507 March Hill Road\, Walpole NH\, for a short overview of how and why to use Strategic Wood Addition (SWA) to improve instream aquatic organism habitat. \n  \nWe’ll then visit a 2-mile section of Great Brook\, a first-order stream in the highlands of Walpole NH\, that Trout Unlimited is in the process of restoring using the addition of large instream wood. \n  \nPresented by Cheshire County Conservation District (CCCD)\, Distant Hill Gardens\, UNH Cooperative Extension\, USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS)\, and The Monadnock Conservancy \n  \nCost: Free\, Registration Required\, Space is limited to 35 registrants \n  \nPlease Note: Pets are not allowed at CCCD events. Service animals trained to to aid a person with a disability are welcome. \n  \nFor questions or assistance in registration contact: \nEmail benee@cheshireconservation.org or call (802) 518-0993 \n  \nUSDA is an equal opportunity employer\, provider and lender.
