The Granite State Community Journalism Initiative: Let’s Talk LGBTQ+ Health
October 24, 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
FreeThe Granite State Community Journalism Initiative presents: “Let’s Talk: LGBTQ+ Health”
Join us in Keene, New Hampshire for the first round of “Let’s Talk,” a series of community conversations from The Granite State Community Journalism Initiative. These conversations are meant to reach and facilitate civic discourse about important issues facing New Hampshire residents and help inform local journalists on how they can better serve the needs of their community.
Over the next few months, we’ll be hosting conversations throughout the state focused on our first topic: “What does rural health care access look like for LGBTQ+ residents?” These conversations will be facilitated and moderated by James Rinker, the digital community engagement journalist for The Keene Sentinel.
This event is free to attend, and dinner is on us!
In a state lacking a reliable public transportation system and an aging physician population, access to health care in rural areas has become more difficult in recent years. This can mean traveling more than an hour in order to access even routine care. Meanwhile, with intensifying polarization and the ever-growing spread of misinformation online regarding gender-affirming health care, New Hampshire residents are left in the dark about where they can go for trustworthy and factual information when trying to understand the issues that affect their LGBTQ+ neighbors and colleagues.
The primary goals of the conversations for this topic are to:
- provide a space to ask questions and gain more knowledge about gender-affirming health care
- gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of rural LGBTQ+ residents of New Hampshire when they seek out health care
- identify solutions to the problem of inaccessible health care for rural New Hampshire residents regardless of identity.
Registration with a valid email is required in order to attend, and the exact location in Keene, New Hampshire will be disclosed to participants 24 hours before the event.
