Author Talk with Dr. Jessica B. Harris

September 17 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

As one of the founders of the annual “September is Black Reading Month” observance, Malik Yakini has for decades encouraged members of Detroit’s Black community to read, write and publish as a way of practicing self-determination. This year commemorates the 41st anniversary of Black Reading Month. Yakini is hosting online public conversations with authors who he knows and respects.

The third conversation in the 2021 series is with Dr. Jessica B. Harris. The conversation will explore what was involved in going from her book “High on the Hog” to the Netflix series, of the same name, based on the book. We will discuss her latest book, “My Soul Looks Back: A Memoir,” and the incredible community she was a part of in the 1970s that included James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, Nina Simone, and others. Registered participants will be able to ask questions and make comments.
