The Feast on This Film Festival features movies that educate our community about the diverse issues affecting our national, regional and local food and agricultural systems. We chose films that will spark conversation and action around building stronger local, regional and sustainable food systems. All films are open to the public.

This two-hour documentary, based on the NYT best selling book by Michael Pollan, sheds new light on one of the most important conflicts of our time—the one that each and every one of us fights when we sit down to a meal.

After I Pick the Fruit
After I Pick the Fruit follows the lives of five immigrant farmworker women over a ten-year period as they labor in the apple orchards and fields of rural western New York, migrate seasonally to Florida, raise their families, and try to hide from the Bush-era immigration raids that were conducted in response to 9/11. Filmed in New York, Florida, and Mexico, this intimate, bittersweet, feature-length film illuminates a community that is nearly invisible to most Americans, and will change the way you look at our national ‘immigration problem.’”
While “buying local” is on the rise, the stories in Growing Local make clear that small farms and access to locally produced food is not a sure thing. In three short films we meet the young farm couple Ben & Taryn, who, on risky sweat-equity, have revitalized a famously fertile piece of farmland into a thriving community food hub, artisanal butcher Ben who helps us better understand how healthier, thoughtful meat production can be supported and sustained, and Richard and Adam, father and son organic dairy farmers struggling to keep their family farm going and in the family. These poignant vignettes help us understand the interconnected fates of Maine’s small farms, consumers and the buy-local movement.
In Defense of Food
From Active Voice: Based on Michael Pollan’s best-selling book, In Defense of Food is a two-hour special for public television that uncovers how incomplete science, vested political interests, and clever marketing campaigns have shaped America’s eating habits in ways that have made us less and less healthy. As the film gears up for a national PBS broadcast in 2015, Active Voice is leveraging the film’s release as an opportunity to inform, engage, and mobilize a broad range of communities to create cultures of healthy eating. We’ll focus on ensuring that the film’s message reaches beyond the choir, and that it can be leveraged to advance programs and policies to improve healthy food access for underserved communities in particular.
